Web Desk: The government has approved a substantial increase in the base prices for attractive vehicle registration numbers, with some rates rising five to ten times, and has also authorised the resale of unsold numbers through online auctions starting this month.
According to officials from the Excise Department, the base price for single-digit numbers such as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and the popular 786 has been raised from 10,000 rupees to as much as 100,000 rupees.
Double-digit numbers will now start at 50,000 rupees, up from 7,000, while triple-digit numbers have increased from 5,000 rupees to 25,000 rupees.
Excise authorities explained that numbers not sold during the initial e-auction are blocked in the system after a specific period. The government has set fixed rates for these leftover numbers so that citizens can purchase them immediately.
Since the start of the e-auction system, 10,400 car numbers, 33,300 motorcycle numbers, and 3,000 commercial vehicle numbers have remained unsold.
The Excise Department has collected over 800 million rupees in revenue through the e-auction system so far. Officials say that the recent increase in base prices, combined with the resale of leftover numbers, is expected to generate millions more in government income.
Authorities confirmed that the government’s decision will be implemented starting this month, and the resale process for unsold numbers will commence immediately.
This move is aimed at maximising revenue while providing citizens an opportunity to purchase highly sought-after vehicle registration numbers.
