Web Desk: Federal minister for law Azam Tarar has warned citizens and journalists to exercise caution on social media when commenting on international affairs, emphasizing that statements affecting friendly countries could have diplomatic consequences.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Attaullah Tarar and Talal Chaudhry, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar said that while Article 19 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, the right comes with legal and ethical limits.

“Every citizen has the right to free speech under Article 19, but this freedom must be exercised responsibly, especially on matters concerning Islam, national security, and friendly countries,” Tarar said. “Irresponsible comments that cross red lines will result in action.”

Attaullah Tarar highlighted that Pakistan maintains close and friendly relations with regional countries, and negative social media commentary or sensationalized content could harm bilateral ties. He urged citizens to distinguish between personal views and official state policy.

“Our oath and the Constitution bind us to speak in line with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official stance. Criticism of domestic politics is acceptable, but foreign policy discussions require prudence,” he added.

Azam Nazir Tarar said Pakistan, as a strategically important and responsible nuclear state, has pursued diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts and engaged actively with the United Nations Security Council. He noted that the government keeps Parliament informed on security matters and that the Prime Minister has communicated with international leaders following recent incidents.

“Pakistan has a clear position on defense and foreign policy, and we are playing an active diplomatic role,” Tarar said.

The government’s warning comes after reports of comments on social media that raised questions among friendly countries about Pakistan’s official position. Authorities emphasized that while citizens may voice opinions, these must not be misinterpreted as the state’s policy, and they should avoid posts that could strain international relations.

The ministers stressed that citizens should always keep the Constitution and Pakistan’s foreign policy objectives in mind while posting online, especially regarding sensitive regional and global issues.
