Web Desk: The race for the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage intensified on Tuesday as several teams secured their places in the newly expanded Round of 32, while five nations saw their campaigns come to an end.
With the group stage entering its final stretch, the tournament’s revamped 48-team format is beginning to reveal the contours of the knockout bracket. For the first time in World Cup history, 32 teams will advance beyond the group phase, creating a larger and more competitive pathway to the title.
Under FIFA’s expanded format, the top two teams from each of the 12 groups automatically qualify for the knockout rounds. They are joined by the eight best third-placed teams across all groups.
The Round of 32 begins on June 28 and runs through July 3, followed by the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, a third-place playoff and the final on July 19.

The exits of Jordan and Panama were confirmed on Monday and Tuesday respectively, while Haiti, Turkey and Tunisia had already seen their hopes extinguished earlier in the tournament.
Meanwhile, FIFA has implemented a significant change to its tiebreaking procedures.
For the first time at a World Cup, head-to-head results take precedence over overall goal difference when teams finish level on points within a group.
The revised system first considers points earned, then head-to-head goal difference and goals scored among tied teams. Only afterward does overall goal difference come into play. Fair-play records and FIFA rankings serve as additional criteria if teams remain inseparable.
The change has already proved decisive in determining which teams remain alive in the battle for the eight coveted third-place qualification spots.
Although several teams have already booked their places in the knockout stage, the contest for the best third-placed positions remains highly competitive.
With many groups yet to complete their final matches, nations including Belgium, Croatia, Paraguay, Algeria, Sweden and Scotland remain in contention for advancement even if they do not finish in the top two of their respective groups.
As the final round of group fixtures approaches, the World Cup’s expanded format is ensuring that qualification battles remain alive across nearly every group, setting up a dramatic finish before the knockout rounds begin on June 28.
