ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Defence has issued a notification appointing Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) on Friday.
The notification came after the President approved the appointment. Yesterday, President Asif Ali Zardari approved the summary recommending Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as Chief of Army Staff and the first Chief of Defence Forces of Pakistan.
The President’s approval was given under Article 243 of the Constitution and Section 8A of the Army Act.
The Defence Ministry’s notification stated that Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will serve as CDF for the next five years while continuing as Chief of Army Staff. Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had signed the summary and sent it to the President for approval.

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir began his military career in 1986 at the Officers Training School (OTS) Mangla. He was commissioned in the Frontier Force Regiment. As a cadet, he received the Sword of Honour, awarded for exceptional performance during training.
His military education and training at key institutions played a vital role in his professional development. Over the years, he held several important command and staff positions.
On October 25, 2018, he was appointed Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI). Later, on June 17, 2019, he became Corps Commander Gujranwala. He also served in various administrative and operational military roles, including as Quartermaster General.
On November 29, 2022, Syed Asim Munir was appointed Chief of Army Staff. Under his leadership, Pakistan dealt India a historic defeat, after which he was honored with the rank of Field Marshal.
