Web Desk: Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has launched Grokipedia, an AI-driven online encyclopedia that the billionaire says will offer a faster and more accurate alternative to Wikipedia.
The platform, which went live on Monday, uses xAI’s Grok language model to automatically generate and update entries. The initial release, labeled version 0.1, includes about 900,000 articles, compared with Wikipedia’s more than seven million English-language pages.
AI replaces human editors
Unlike Wikipedia’s community-edited model, Grokipedia relies entirely on artificial intelligence for content creation and verification. Users cannot directly edit entries; instead, they can submit suggestions through the Grok assistant, which reviews and applies verified updates.
Musk said the approach is designed to ensure accuracy “without ideological interference.” He has previously accused Wikipedia of political bias and described Grokipedia as “a necessary step toward understanding the universe.”
Features and functionality
The new site features a minimalist, dark-themed interface and offers AI-generated summaries across a range of subjects, including science, technology, history and culture.
Key features include automated fact-checking, cross-referenced citations and adaptive learning tools that refine content based on user engagement.
xAI said future updates will expand Grokipedia’s article base and introduce multilingual support.
Mixed early reaction
The launch drew mixed reactions online. Supporters praised the move as an innovation that could challenge Wikipedia’s dominance, while critics questioned its accuracy and transparency. Some analysts noted that early entries appear to mirror existing Wikipedia content, raising questions about originality and sourcing.
Looking ahead
xAI plans to release version 1.0 in early 2026, which Musk said will be “ten times better” and include improved verification systems and broader accessibility.
The launch marks Musk’s latest push into the knowledge and AI sectors, following ventures such as SpaceX, Tesla, Neuralink and the social media platform X. With Grokipedia, he aims to test whether AI can build and maintain a more objective source of truth online.
