The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declined the request of Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti for postponing the local government elections in Quetta.
According to the notification issued by the ECP, the local body elections in Quetta will be held as per schedule. The polling for local government polls in Quett is set for December 28, 2025. The electoral watchdog stressed that the Balochistan government needs to completely cooperate with the commission to make the polls possible in a free and fair way.
There are directions in the issued order for relative authorities to protect voters, citizens, and election staff to make the polls possible.
However, a member of the Election Commission, Shah Muhammad, showed concern regarding low voter turnout due to cold weather in the city.
Shah Muhammad noted that in the months of December and January, people migrate from Quetta to other cities of the country. He was also concerned about the law and order situation in the province, as he suggested postponing the polls until the weather and law and order situation get better in the province.
