BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that Beijing and Washington must not fall into a dangerous cycle of retaliation.
Speaking after his meeting with US President Donald Trump, Xi remarked that China’s economy is like an ocean, vast and resilient enough to withstand all kinds of risks and challenges. He emphasized that China neither seeks to challenge nor replace any other country, but rather focuses on improving its own performance.
“Dialogue is better than confrontation,” Xi stated, adding that overall relations between the two countries remain stable. He called on both sides to ensure follow-up discussions between their respective teams and underscored that trade and economic cooperation should be the cornerstone for expanding China-US relations.
The Chinese president further noted that commercial ties should serve as the foundation of friendship between China and the United States. Both nations, he said, must focus on the long-term benefits of cooperation and avoid entering into a dangerous cycle of revenge.
Xi added that economic and trade teams from both sides held detailed discussions and agreed on steps to resolve outstanding issues. He pointed out that there were positive developments in cooperation on curbing illegal immigration and expressed mutual resolve to combat telecom fraud, artificial intelligence misuse, and money laundering.
Meanwhile, Chinese state media reported that the presidents of China and the United States agreed to strengthen cooperation in the fields of energy and trade, while maintaining open channels of dialogue.
