Argentina’s President Javier Milei will not attend the FIFA World Cup final.
According to international media reports, Milei believes Argentine winning streak is linked to his personal match-day routine.
After Argentina reached the final, he was asked whether he would travel to New Jersey to watch the match alongside U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He replied that he would instead watch the final from home.
Explaining his decision, Milei said he had watched all of Argentina’s previous matches from home. During the match against Switzerland, he was wearing a heavy jacket because of the cold weather. When he briefly took the jacket off after feeling too warm, Switzerland immediately scored. He said he put the jacket back on and kept it on until the end of the match.
Milei added that he plans to wear the same jacket while watching the World Cup final, believing it is part of Argentina’s good fortune.
Such superstitions are also common among many Argentine fans, who often associate the team’s success with personal rituals.
It is also worth noting that Argentine presidents have traditionally avoided attending national team matches in person since 1990, when then-President Carlos Menem watched Argentina’s opening World Cup match and the team suffered a shock defeat to Cameroon. Since then, no Argentine president has attended the national team’s matches from the stadium.
