Aldi has confirmed that it will close all its UK stores for three days over the festive period. The supermarket says this decision will allow staff to spend quality time with their families during the Christmas break.

The discount retailer will shut all stores on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. Shops will reopen on Saturday, December 27, and again on Friday, January 2, 2026, after the New Year’s Day closure.

Rebecca Heley, communications director at Aldi UK, said the move reflects the company’s focus on employee well-being. She stated, “Christmas is a special time, and we want to ensure all of our colleagues have the opportunity to relax and enjoy it with their loved ones. That’s why all Aldi stores will be closed on Boxing Day this year.”

She added that staff work hard to deliver a great shopping experience during the holiday season, and the closures are a way to thank them. “We know how hard colleagues work to deliver an amazing Christmas for our customers, and this is one small way of saying thank you,” she said.

This announcement follows a growing trend among major UK retailers to give workers more time off during the holidays. Home Bargains recently revealed similar plans to close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. A spokesperson from Home Bargains said the closures are a way to recognise their staff’s efforts throughout the year.

They explained that as a family-run business, they understand the importance of spending time with loved ones during the festive period. “We’re proud to give our teams additional time off to enjoy the festive season,” the spokesperson added.

B&M has also confirmed plans to close its stores on Christmas Day, reopening on Boxing Day. These moves show a broader industry shift toward prioritising staff well-being and work-life balance during one of the busiest times of the year.

For shoppers, the temporary closures mean planning ahead will be important. Customers are advised to stock up on essentials before the festive break to avoid last-minute issues. Many supermarkets are expected to see increased foot traffic in the days leading up to Christmas Eve.

Despite the planned shutdown, Aldi says it will continue to focus on offering value to customers before and after the holidays. The retailer is preparing for a busy run-up to Christmas with special seasonal offers and promotions.

In addition to the holiday closures, Aldi also announced an increase in its minimum hourly pay for store assistants. From the start of September, pay will rise from £12.40 to £12.71 per hour. The company says this pay rise is part of its ongoing effort to support staff amid rising living costs.

The pay boost is expected to benefit thousands of Aldi employees across the UK. It reflects the retailer’s aim to remain competitive in the supermarket sector while supporting its workforce.

The closures underline Aldi’s commitment to employee welfare while maintaining its strong position in the UK grocery market. By giving staff time to rest, the supermarket hopes to return to business with refreshed teams ready for the New Year.

While the temporary shutdown may cause minor inconvenience for shoppers, many have praised the decision as a positive step for staff morale. The move also aligns Aldi with other major retailers choosing to close during the holiday period to support their employees.

With customer demand high and competition fierce, Aldi’s choice highlights how businesses are balancing commercial goals with staff well-being. The supermarket believes this balance will help it continue to deliver value and quality to customers in the long term.
