After sugar and tomatoes, onions have now turned into the new kitchen essential to hit the Rs 200 per kg rate, creating difficulties for consumers, already dealing with a historic price hike.
Due to high inflation in the country, basic food items are unaffordable for citizens now.
After tomatoes, skyrocketing from Rs.. 50 to Rs. 500 per Kg, Onions, which are a basic necessity for people in Pakistan become part of costly everyday item.
According to several reports, Onions price crossed Rs.. 200 per kg in big cities of Pakistan, including Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Multan.
The continuous surge in food costs made everyday cooking items unaffordable for middle class people in the country, who are already struggling with inflation in Pakistan.
Earlier, the government’s price control system failed to manage inflation, as the market rate of tomatoes in Islamabad touched Rs380 per kilogram.
In the federal capital, the market price of tomatoes is Rs380. However, the price of tomatoes in Rawalpindi, Lahore, and Gujranwala is Rs360, 340, and 320 respectively.
According to the data issued by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the sharp increase in tomato rates comes as weekly inflation- tracked through the Sensitive Price Indicator(SPI).
