The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has split Swat into two separate districts under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Land Revenue Act, 1967, as per a a notification issued on Tuesday.
According to the notification issued by the Board of Revenue, Revenue and Estate Department, Swat District has been divided into Upper Swat District and Swat District, and the decision has taken immediate effect.
According to the notification, this decision was made in the 43rd meeting of the provincial cabinet held on December 19, 2025. The step has been taken under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Land Revenue Act, 1967. The government stated that the decision was made in the public interest and to ensure better administrative convenience.
As per the notification, the headquarters of Upper Swat District will be Matta, and the district will include the tehsils of Matta, Bahrain, and Khwazakhela. On the other hand, the headquarters of Swat District has been designated as Gulkada, and it will include the tehsils of Babuzai, Kabal, Charbagh, and Barikot.
According to officials, the division of the district will improve administrative affairs, ensure timely provision of services to the public, and enable effective implementation of development projects. After the creation of the new districts, police, judicial, electoral, and other government institutions will also take steps in accordance with their respective administrative jurisdictions.
