Abigail Spanberger becomes Virginia’s first female governor

WASHINGTON: In a historic political shift, Democrat Abigail Spanberger has been elected as the first female governor of the U.S. state of Virginia, while Ghazala Hashmi elected as state’s first female Muslim and South Asian lieutenant governor.

According to reports, Spanberger, the Democratic candidate, defeated Republican Winsome Earl Sears in the gubernatorial election. Spanberger secured 784,763 votes, while Sears received 649,937 votes, placing her second.

Meanwhile, in the lieutenant governor’s race, Democrat Ghazala Hashmi is maintaining a clear lead over her Republican rival John Reed, with strong indications of victory.

Hashmi’s potential win has drawn significant attention from South Asian communities, particularly among Indian and Pakistani Americans. Her success would mark a new milestone for Muslim women in U.S. politics. Hashmi previously served as Virginia’s first Muslim and South Asian state senator.

A seasoned educator and advocate for inclusivity and social justice, Hashmi’s legislative priorities include public education, voting rights, protection of democracy, reproductive freedom, prevention of gun violence, environmental sustainability, affordable housing, and accessible healthcare.

Born in Hyderabad, India, in 1964 to Tanveer and Zia Hashmi, Ghazala moved to Georgia at the age of four with her mother and elder brother to join her father, who was completing a Ph.D. in international relations and beginning a teaching career.

According to media reports, Hashmi spent her early years in her maternal grandparents’ home, where her grandfather worked for the Andhra Pradesh government’s finance department.

She was raised in a small college town during the period when racial segregation in public schools was ending. Witnessing efforts to bridge cultural, racial, and socioeconomic divides deeply influenced her belief in building inclusive communities and fostering dialogue.
