Fawad Khan’s Abir Gulaal to release worldwide on 29 August, except India

WEBDESK: The romantic Bollywood movie Abir Gulaal, starring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and Indian actress Vaani Kapoor, will be released in cinemas across the world on 29 August 2025 except in India.

The film tells the story of Gulaal, who escapes an arranged marriage and ends up in London. There, she meets Abir Singh, a guarded chef with a troubled past. Their relationship begins with rivalry but slowly grows into love, as they both learn to heal and forgive.

The movie will be shown in more than 75 countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It is directed by Aarti S Bagdi and produced by Vivek B Agarwal, Avantika Hari, and Rakesh Sippy. Music is by Amit Trivedi with lyrics by Kumaar.

Ban on Pakistani Artists in India

The release in India was cancelled because of a ban on Pakistani actors. The ban was renewed after tensions between India and Pakistan in May this year. India accused Pakistan of involvement in a deadly attack in Pahalgam, which Pakistan denied. The two countries carried out military operations in response to each other.

Several trade organisations in India supported the ban. This also affected other films with Pakistani actors, including Sardaar Ji 3 starring Hania Aamir.

Abir Gulaal marks Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood after nine years. He last appeared in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016 before the original ban on Pakistani artists. His earlier films include Khoobsurat and Kapoor & Sons.

The film’s teaser and songs had been well received before the political situation worsened. Vaani Kapoor, who stars opposite Fawad, spoke out against the hate and boycott calls. “Have room and let people be,” she said. Co-star Ridhi Dogra said she joined the project when relations between the two countries were calmer.

For now, it remains unclear if the film will be released in Pakistan, where Indian films are also banned unless made outside India.
