KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has declared that the central bank, along with all banks, microfinance banks, development finance institutions, and other financial institutions, will remain closed on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

According to an official statement issued by the SBP, the closure aligns with the public holiday announced by the Government of Pakistan in connection with Pakistan’s Independence Day.

This annual holiday commemorates Pakistan’s independence, and all financial institutions across the country will suspend operations for the day.

It is important to note here that four consecutive public holidays are likely in Pakistan this August, including Independence Day on August 14.

According to a Cabinet Division notification, a public holiday will be observed nationwide on Wednesday, August 14, to mark Independence Day.

Chehlum of Imam Hussain (RA) will fall on Friday, August 15. Although Chehlum is not listed as a federal public holiday, provinces may declare local holidays in specific areas.

Last year public holidays were announced in Rawalpindi and Karachi on the occasion of Chehlum.

If Chehlum is declared a holiday in certain regions again this year, people in those areas could benefit from a four-day break, from Thursday, August 14, to Sunday, August 17.

If approved, the extended break would offer a rare opportunity for families to plan travel, religious observance, or rest without taking additional leave.

Travel bookings and hotel reservations in tourist spots like Murree, Swat, and northern areas may see a surge as people take advantage of the potential long weekend.

However, confirmation of Chehlum as a public holiday will depend on individual provincial decisions, which are typically announced closer to the date. Citizens are advised to stay updated through official notifications.
