CNN anchor and host of the programme CNN Connect, Becky Anderson, has posted on X the detailed response sent by the Government of Pakistan to CNN. The Government of Pakistan rejected allegations that former Prime Minister Imran Khan is being kept in isolation in prison, prevented from contacting his family, subjected to inappropriate conditions, or deprived of medical facilities. The government said the convicted prisoner is being provided visitation, communication, food, exercise and medical facilities in accordance with prison rules, judicial directions and security requirements.
The government clarified in its statement that Imran Khan is not being held under executive detention but is imprisoned following convictions handed down by competent courts after judicial proceedings. According to the government, he also remains entitled to pursue all legal remedies available to him under Pakistani law.
The Government of Pakistan said Imran Khan’s imprisonment is governed by Pakistan’s prison rules, relevant judicial directions and necessary security arrangements for a high-profile prisoner. The government categorically rejected allegations that Imran Khan is being kept in punitive solitary confinement, subjected to cruelty or deprived of basic facilities.
The statement said Imran Khan has access to visits, telephone calls, reading material and television in accordance with prison rules. He is also permitted to receive home-cooked food and keep exercise equipment. According to the government, Imran Khan has been provided an exclusive compound consisting of seven cells, with facilities for sleeping, sanitation and exercise.
The government further said that food is prepared separately for him and includes meat, chicken, fruit, milk, nuts, juices and bottled water. The statement said appropriate dietary facilities are available to Imran Khan and that the impression that he is being deprived of food or basic necessities is incorrect.
The government also rejected claims that Imran Khan has been completely isolated from his family and the outside world, citing official prison records. According to the government statement, approximately 198 interview sessions have been recorded during his imprisonment, involving more than 900 visitor entries. These included Imran Khan’s sisters, family members, lawyers, doctors, political representatives and other approved visitors.
The statement further said Imran Khan has also been permitted weekly meetings with his wife, with the latest recorded meeting taking place on August 4, 2026. The government said prison records also document telephone, landline and WhatsApp communication with family members.
According to the statement, contact has taken place with family members in Pakistan and abroad, while a telephone conversation between Imran Khan and one of his sons was recorded on March 21, 2026. The government further said meetings between Imran Khan and his sisters on August 18, 19 and 25, 2026, are also part of the official record.
The government also rejected allegations that Imran Khan has not been provided appropriate medical facilities or that Supreme Court directions have not been followed. According to the government statement, approximately 30 medical examinations of Imran Khan have been conducted during his imprisonment, involving specialist teams and medical boards.
The government said these medical examinations involved various institutions, including the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Shifa International, Shaukat Khanum and Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, while he has also been regularly examined by the prison doctor. According to the government, after Imran Khan was diagnosed with a retinal condition, he was provided specialist treatment.
