Web Desk: A new weather system is expected to bring widespread rain, thunderstorms and isolated heavy downpours to parts of Pakistan through Sept. 6, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
The Met Office said monsoon currents were continuing to penetrate the country’s upper regions. In addition, a westerly wave is expected to enter the northern parts of the country from Aug. 31 and could persist until Sept. 5.
As a result, several areas in Kashmir, Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan are likely to experience intermittent wet weather over the coming days.
Kashmir is expected to remain under the influence of the weather system from the evening or night of Aug. 28 until Sept. 6, with occasional breaks.
Rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, along with isolated heavy falls, is forecast for Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber and Mirpur.
Meanwhile, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree and the Galliyat are expected to receive rain, wind and thunderstorms from Aug. 29 through Sept. 5.
The same weather conditions are forecast for Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Wazirabad and Hafizabad.
From Sept. 1 to Sept. 5, the system is expected to affect Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal and Pakpattan.
The Met Office expects intermittent rainfall, meaning conditions may ease temporarily between spells.
Several districts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa are also expected to receive rain and thunderstorms from Aug. 29 to Sept. 5.
The forecast covers Peshawar, Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Mardan, Nowshera, Charsadda, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Hangu, Kurram, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Haripur.
Further south, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu and Waziristan are likely to experience similar conditions from Sept. 1 to Sept. 4, again with intermittent breaks.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain accompanied by winds and thunderstorms is forecast from Aug. 30 to Sept. 6.
Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche and Shigar are among the areas expected to receive rainfall during the period.
In contrast, most parts of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to remain predominantly hot and humid during the forecast period.
The extended weather system is expected to keep much of northern Pakistan under unsettled conditions into the first week of September, with authorities and residents in vulnerable areas advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions.
