Journalism or vulgarity? BBC chasing views with controversial content aimed at Pakistan

articles dealing with sex

Web Desk: The BBC has come under criticism in Pakistan over the volume and presentation of articles dealing with sex, sexual health, pornography and related criminal cases on its Urdu-language platform.

Critics accuse the broadcaster of prioritising sensational subjects and audience traffic over what they describe as responsible journalism. However, the BBC’s publicly available topic page shows that its “Sex” section contains a broad mix of health, safeguarding, crime and social-issue reporting rather than evidence of an “online sex business.”

The controversy centres on the BBC Urdu section dedicated to sexual issues, where headlines cover subjects ranging from sexually transmitted infections and sexual violence to pornography, addiction and sexual health.

Among the articles listed are reports about gonorrhea, the risks associated with sexual activity, pornography’s impact on children, sexual violence and the use of drugs in sexual situations. The page also contains reporting on cases involving sexual abuse and criminal allegations.

Critics have described the coverage as vulgar and sensational, arguing that the BBC is using provocative subjects to attract more views in Pakistan.

Some have gone further, accusing the broadcaster of exploiting the banner of journalism to distribute inappropriate material to young Pakistanis.

The BBC’s own topic page, however, presents the material as a dedicated section covering sexual issues. Its recent listings include a report on chemical castration for convicted sex offenders, an explainer on gonorrhea and an investigation into allegations involving drugging and sexual assault.

The page also includes stories examining how parents can discuss sexual questions with children and reporting on trends involving pornography and sexual health among young people.

Sexual health, abuse, exploitation and pornography can carry substantial public-interest value, particularly when coverage focuses on prevention, medical information, criminal investigations or victim protection.

At the same time, the wording and presentation of such stories can influence how audiences perceive the reporting, particularly in culturally conservative societies where explicit sexual material remains highly sensitive.

The strongest allegations circulating online describe the BBC’s coverage as an “online sex business” and call for the broadcaster to be banned in Pakistan.

The material provided as evidence, however, consists primarily of links and screenshots of BBC Urdu headlines. Those headlines demonstrate that the broadcaster publishes a significant amount of sexual-health and sex-related reporting deliberately targeting Pakistani youth for that purpose.

The backlash reflects a broader dispute over the BBC’s editorial approach in Pakistan, particularly when coverage involves culturally sensitive issues.

Critics argue that provocative headlines can cross the line between public-interest journalism and sensationalism. Supporters of such reporting can counter that subjects such as sexual abuse, sexually transmitted infections and pornography require public discussion precisely because they affect health and safety.

For now, the BBC’s Urdu “Sex” topic page remains a visible source of controversy, with critics portraying it as evidence of sensational journalism while the material itself shows a wider portfolio of health, crime, abuse and social-affairs reporting.
