Web Desk: Police in Azad Kashmir said on Friday they had thwarted an attempt to disrupt public order and interfere with the peaceful conduct of upcoming elections in Muzaffarabad, adding that the situation was fully under control and normalcy had been restored across the city. In a statement, the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Police said law enforcement agencies acted swiftly after groups allegedly attempted to create unrest following the successful completion of elections in the Mirpur Division.
Authorities said security forces responded promptly and prevented the situation from escalating, ensuring that preparations for the next phase of elections continued without interruption. According to the police statement, disturbances were reported at two to three locations in Muzaffarabad, where an estimated 200 to 300 individuals were involved in unrest.
During the incidents, two police officers sustained serious injuries while carrying out their duties, police said.Authorities added that officers exercised restraint and professionalism while responding to the situation, preventing further deterioration in law and order.
Police said preliminary investigations and available evidence suggested that the activities were aimed at disrupting the peaceful conduct of general elections scheduled for Aug. 2, 2026, in the Muzaffarabad Division.
According to the statement, authorities believed the unrest was intended to undermine public order and create obstacles to the electoral process. However, police said their timely intervention not only restored stability but also safeguarded the democratic process, protected public property and ensured the safety of citizens.
Meanwhile, authorities said legal proceedings had been initiated against individuals allegedly involved in the disturbances. Police stated that action would continue in accordance with the law and warned that no leniency would be shown toward those found responsible for attempts to destabilise public order.
The AJK Police spokesperson urged residents to avoid spreading or acting on unverified information and rumors circulating on social media.Officials called on citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and play a constructive role in maintaining peace during the election period. Police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property, upholding the rule of law and ensuring the peaceful conduct of elections.
They added that legal action would continue against anyone found involved in activities that threaten public safety or undermine the democratic process.
