Web Desk: Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has opened applications for its Visiting Student Research Program (VSRP), offering fully funded research internships to undergraduate and master’s students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The program allows eligible students to work alongside KAUST faculty on more than 100 research projects, providing practical laboratory experience and exposure to advanced scientific research in fields ranging from engineering and computer science to environmental and biological sciences.
The VSRP is open to third- and fourth-year bachelor’s students, as well as master’s students, with internship placements lasting between two and six months.
Unlike fixed-cycle internship programs, participants can select their preferred start and end dates throughout the year, allowing students from universities around the world to join at different times.
KAUST said the program is designed to help students gain hands-on research experience while preparing those considering graduate studies or research careers.
The university will cover accommodation, return airfare and tuition-related costs for selected interns. Participants will also receive a monthly stipend of US$1,000 to help cover living expenses during their stay.
Interns will have access to KAUST’s research laboratories, core scientific facilities and campus resources, while taking part in social and cultural activities organized by the university.
Eligibility and application requirements
Applicants must be enrolled in the third year or above of an undergraduate STEM degree or be pursuing a master’s degree. Candidates are required to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Applicants must also demonstrate English-language proficiency. Those who do not initially meet the university’s language requirements may be offered a Duolingo English Test voucher during the application process if required.
Current KAUST students, alumni and PhD candidates are not eligible for the program.
Applications must include official English-language academic transcripts, a recommendation letter from a faculty member at the applicant’s current institution, a valid passport with at least six months’ validity, a statement of purpose and a curriculum vitae.
KAUST said the program brings together students from leading universities worldwide and offers opportunities to collaborate with internationally recognised researchers in a multicultural environment.
The university said its campus hosts members from more than 100 nationalities, giving participants the opportunity to conduct research while gaining international academic and cultural experience.
