NAROWAL: After the water level in the River Ravi rose, rescue teams successfully rescued 42 farmers who had become stranded.

India opens Salal dam gates

India has opened all the gates of the Salal Dam, raising concerns over a significant increase in the flow of the Chenab River and prompting authorities in Pakistan’s Punjab province to issue a high alert in several districts.

According to the Punjab Irrigation Department, the release of water from the Salal Dam is expected to rapidly increase the Chenab’s water level, potentially causing flooding in low-lying areas. District administrations, including Sialkot and Wazirabad, have been placed on alert as a precaution.

The Irrigation Department said all relevant agencies have been instructed to complete advance preparedness measures, while officials continue to closely monitor the river’s water levels.

Assistant Commissioner Wazirabad Jawad Pirzada said the next 48 hours are critical, as a major flood surge is expected to reach the Chenab during this period.

He added that the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned of the possibility of major flooding. The district administration has directed all concerned departments to remain fully prepared for any emergency and urged residents to avoid unnecessary movement near riverbanks and strictly follow official safety instructions.
