The Guardian report raises questions over Modi’s foreign awards

The guardian questions Modi award

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has strongly criticized Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying on X that this may be “the most embarrassing story yet.”

In his post, Khawaja Asif claimed that an honour awarded to Modi was created only days before his visit. He alleged that the certificate was generated using a low-quality artificial intelligence (AI) model, contained obvious spelling mistakes, and that Modi became its first and only recipient.

He added that the award was either “the worst attempt at cheap publicity” or “an extreme act of flattery,” saying Modi was bringing embarrassment to both himself and India.

Khawaja Asif also shared a report published by the British newspaper The Guardian, titled: “Give Him Any Award, He’ll Show Up to Collect It: Narendra Modi’s Foreign Honours Keep Piling Up.”

According to the report, during Modi’s visit to the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles last week, he was presented with what was described as one of the country’s highest honours, the Guardian of the Blue Horizon award.

The report says Seychelles President Patrick Herminie presented Modi with a trophy and certificate. However, observers later pointed out several irregularities, including spelling mistakes in the English word “Republic” and in the spelling of “Seychelles” on the certificate.

It further states that the award was created just three days before Modi’s visit and that Modi is its first—and so far only—recipient.
