Mayor urges citizens to celebrate responsibly, exercise caution, and be mindful of others during moments of joy

The celebrations following Mexico’s historic victory in the FIFA World Cup turned tragic in the capital, Mexico City, where three people lost their lives due to suffocation in the crowd.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around the iconic Angel of Independence monument and Paseo de la Reforma, where thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador.

Medical officials said emergency teams provided treatment to several unconscious individuals at different locations. Despite all efforts, a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman could not be saved.

Later, a 48-year-old woman, who had been hospitalized after suffering suffocation, also died during treatment.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged citizens to celebrate responsibly, exercise caution, and be considerate of others during such occasions.

It is worth mentioning that Mexico defeated Ecuador to register its first FIFA World Cup knockout-stage victory in 40 years. Following the historic win, large crowds of fans poured onto the streets across the country, particularly in Mexico City, where the celebrations quickly turned into a tragic incident.

Local authorities have launched an investigation to reach the exact sequence of events that led to the tragedy. Officials are reviewing crowd management measures and security arrangements in place during the celebrations.

The tragic incident has triggered fresh questions about public safety during large-scale sporting celebrations. Experts have stressed the need for improved crowd control, emergency planning and better coordination to prevent similar incidents in the future.
