Oil-producing glands in the scalp become more active during hot weather
As summer temperatures rise, hair care becomes a challenge for many people. Intense sunlight, sweat, and humidity can make hair feel greasy and lifeless more quickly, leading many to wonder whether they should shampoo their hair every day.
According to dermatologists, there is no single rule that applies to everyone. The decision should be based on an individual’s hair type and specific needs.
Experts say that during the summer season, the oil-producing glands in the scalp become more active. When this natural oil mixes with sweat, it can accumulate around the hair roots and lead to problems such as itching, dandruff, and skin irritation. Therefore, keeping the scalp clean is important, but excessive use of shampoo can also be harmful.
According to experts, washing hair daily with shampoos containing harsh chemicals or sulfates can strip the scalp of its natural moisture. In response, the body may produce oil more rapidly, causing hair to become greasy again quickly while the ends appear dry and dull.
Experts recommend that the frequency of washing should depend on hair type. People with straight and fine hair tend to experience faster oil distribution from roots to ends, so they should wash their hair every one or two days during summer.
On the other hand, people with wavy or moderately thick hair experience slower oil distribution, making shampooing every two to three days a more suitable option to prevent excessive dryness.
The situation is different for those with very curly and coarse hair. Natural oils cannot easily travel throughout such hair, so frequent shampooing may leave it weak and dry. Experts suggest washing this type of hair every four to seven days, or even less often in some cases.
Even after exercise, gym workouts, or heavy sweating, using shampoo every time is not always necessary. Experts explain that sweat dissolves in water, so rinsing hair thoroughly with lukewarm water and gently cleaning the scalp with fingers can effectively remove sweat and salt buildup. Applying a light conditioner to the hair ends afterward can help keep hair fresh and soft.
To maintain clean and healthy hair, experts also offer several useful tips. They advise applying shampoo primarily to the roots, as the lather naturally cleans the length of the hair. If daily washing is unavoidable, choosing a mild sulfate-free shampoo is recommended.
Similarly, dry shampoo can be an effective alternative. However, experts suggest applying it to the roots before bedtime rather than in the morning, as it then has sufficient time to absorb excess oil overnight.
Experts also recommend using a clarifying shampoo twice a month to thoroughly remove the effects of sweat, dust, and hard water. According to them, if the scalp feels tight, irritated, or itchy, it may be a sign that you are washing your hair too often. Conversely, if the scalp starts feeling heavy and greasy, it is probably time to shampoo again.
