YouTube has started rolling out its new in-app messaging feature to a wider audience after completing its testing phase. The feature aims to allow users to communicate directly with one another within YouTube while sharing their favorite videos.
According to a private TV channel, the new feature will introduce a messaging icon in the upper-right corner of the YouTube app. Through this icon, users will be able to share videos, Shorts, and live streams, as well as engage in one-to-one conversations.
However, one distinctive aspect of the system is that users must first send an invitation link before they can start a direct conversation with someone. The link will remain valid for seven days and must be shared through WhatsApp or another third-party chat application. The purpose is to make it easier for friends and family members to connect rather than encouraging communication with strangers.
According to YouTube, users strongly requested the feature during last year’s testing period. Interestingly, the company had offered a similar messaging service until 2019 before discontinuing it.
When a user clicks on an invitation link, they will be asked to choose either “Allow Messaging” or “Not Now.” For this reason, the feature is designed primarily for sharing videos and discussing them, rather than functioning as a full-fledged social chat platform.
