Web Desk: The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Friday announced July 27 as the date for general elections, paving the way for a new electoral contest amid debate over constitutional reforms and refugee representation.

“Anyone with concerns should take them to the people through elections,” government representatives said, stressing that political differences should be settled through public mandate rather than confrontation.

They also warned that certain elements were attempting to derail the electoral process and called on all political forces to support a peaceful and transparent vote.

The election schedule was announced a day after the AJK Legislative Assembly passed a resolution reaffirming the status of 12 seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees.

According to the resolution, refugee representation constitutes a historical and constitutional reality and remains an integral component of Azad Kashmir’s political framework.

Furthermore, the resolution stated that constitutional reforms fall within the exclusive mandate of elected representatives and should remain under the authority of the Legislative Assembly.

Lawmakers also called for extensive consultations with political parties, bar associations, the bar council, civil society organizations and constitutional experts before introducing any significant constitutional changes.

Meanwhile, political activity is expected to intensify across the region as parties prepare for the July 27 vote.
