Driverless public transport could soon be everywhere

Driverless public transport

Web Desk: NVIDIA is accelerating its push into autonomous transportation through a series of partnerships with automakers, software developers and ride-hailing companies as the race to commercialize driverless vehicles gains momentum.

The technology company is working with Foxconn, VinFast, Autobrains, Uber and HUMAIN to deploy autonomous electric vehicles powered by its DRIVE Hyperion platform across multiple international markets.

The initiative centers on Level 4 autonomous driving technology, which enables vehicles to operate without human intervention within designated areas and under specific conditions. NVIDIA’s DRIVE Hyperion platform combines the DRIVE AGX in vehicle computer, the safety certified Halos operating system and an advanced sensor suite that includes cameras, radar and other detection technologies.

As part of the expansion, Foxconn is deepening its collaboration with NVIDIA to design and manufacture fully autonomous electric vehicles in Taiwan. The companies plan to begin deployment in Kaohsiung where local authorities are upgrading transportation infrastructure to support smart mobility services.

Foxconn aims to launch its first commercial robotaxi service by 2028. Initially, the vehicles will connect airports with city centers before expanding to routes linked to Taiwan’s high-speed rail network.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese automaker VinFast has joined forces with autonomous driving software company Autobrains to bring NVIDIA-powered robotaxis to Southeast Asia. Under the partnership, VinFast will manufacture the vehicles while Autobrains provides the autonomous driving software stack.

In Europe, Uber and Autobrains are preparing to launch a robotaxi pilot program in Munich later this year. The service will integrate autonomous vehicles powered by NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion into Uber’s existing ride-hailing platform, allowing customers to request driverless rides through the same application they currently use.

At the heart of several projects is Autobrains’ Agentic AI technology, which takes a different approach from traditional autonomous driving systems. Instead of relying on a single model to handle every driving scenario, the platform uses specialized decision-making systems designed to adapt to changing road conditions and unexpected events.

According to the company, this architecture enables vehicles to reason and respond more effectively in real-world environments.

NVIDIA is also expanding its autonomous vehicle ecosystem into the Middle East. Saudi Arabia-based HUMAIN plans to deploy robotaxis powered by the DRIVE Hyperion platform as part of broader efforts to integrate advanced transportation technologies into the Kingdom’s rapidly growing smart city initiatives.

Industry analysts view Saudi Arabia as a potentially important testing ground for autonomous transportation due to significant investments in digital infrastructure and next-generation urban development projects.

Unlike conventional electric vehicles, robotaxis require powerful computing systems capable of processing vast amounts of sensor data in real time while making safety-critical driving decisions. As a result, developers face substantially greater technical and regulatory challenges.

NVIDIA is positioning DRIVE Hyperion as a common platform that allows automakers and mobility providers to accelerate development without building complete self-driving systems from scratch.

If the current partnerships achieve their deployment goals, autonomous electric vehicles could move beyond limited pilot programs and become a more widely available transportation option in major cities over the coming years.
