A severe heatwave has been forecast across the country during the Eid-ul-Adha holidays, with a high-pressure system expected to form on May 25 and intensify further by May 26.
According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures may rise by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius, and the system could trigger a moderate to severe heatwave from May 25 to May 31.
Maximum temperatures in several cities including Peshawar, Swabi, Nowshera, Mardan, Kohat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Lahore, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Okara, Kasur, Faisalabad, Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Kotli, and Bhimber are expected to reach 42 to 45°C, which is 5 to 7 degrees above normal.
In Malakand, districts of Hazara Division, and Gilgit-Baltistan, temperatures may rise to 38 to 40°C.
In southern and central regions including Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Larkana, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and others, temperatures could soar between 47 and 50°C.
Karachi is expected to remain extremely hot with temperatures likely between 35 and 38°C. Night temperatures are also expected to increase during the heatwave period.
The citizens are urged to take precautionary measures in the light of the upcoming scorching heat and to avoid outdoor unnecessary activities. Elderly people and children are more prone to heatstroke; therefore, they need to be cared during these days.
