Various proposals regarding PTA tax on mobile phones are under review: Tariq Fazal Chaudhry

The Senate was informed that a proposal to abolish taxes imposed on mobile phones is under consideration by the government.

Responding to a question by Senator Haji Hidayatullah Khan during the Upper House session, Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that due to the current economic situation, the government is sometimes compelled to take certain unavoidable measures despite its wishes.

He stated that various proposals regarding PTA tax on mobile phones are being reviewed in order to provide maximum relief to the public, especially overseas Pakistanis.

Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry further explained that mobile phones brought into Pakistan from abroad automatically get blocked after a few weeks because once they are registered on local networks, they come under the PTA system.

He added that the government is seriously working on providing more facilities to overseas Pakistanis, and different options are currently being considered in this regard.

It is worth noting that PTA taxes and mobile phone registration have long been an issue for overseas Pakistanis, many of whom frequently complain about high taxes and the blocking of mobile phones brought from abroad. Consumers have also demanded a simpler and more user friendly registration procedure to reduce difficulties faced by travelers and expatriates.
