Islamabad seeks UNSC action on Indus Waters Treaty suspension

Indus Waters Treaty

Web Desk: Pakistan has formally approached the United Nations Security Council, urging it to address concerns related to the Indus Waters Treaty and its implications for regional stability.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar brought the matter to the council’s attention through an official letter. Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, delivered the letter to the current council president, Jamal Fares Alrowaiei.

In the communication, Pakistan highlighted developments following India’s decision last year to suspend the implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty. Officials warned that the move carries serious consequences for peace, security and humanitarian conditions in the region.

Pakistan has urged the council to take notice of what it described as an increasingly concerning situation. It called on India to fully restore the treaty’s implementation and immediately resume cooperation mechanisms, including data sharing required under the agreement.

Furthermore, Pakistan asked India to avoid using water as a means of pressure and to adhere to its international commitments in good faith.

During the briefing, Ambassador Ahmad also raised concerns about what he termed as repeated unfounded allegations and propaganda by India. He stressed that such actions come at a time when Pakistan is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting peace and stability at both regional and global levels.

In addition, Ahmad pointed to the unresolved Jammu and Kashmir issue as a key factor behind ongoing instability in South Asia. He reiterated that the dispute remains on the agenda of the UN Security Council and requires a fair and lasting resolution in line with council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Pakistan’s move signals a renewed diplomatic push to internationalise concerns over water security and broader regional tensions, as the country seeks greater engagement from global institutions.
