Web Desk: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked US President Donald Trump for accepting a request to extend a ceasefire involving Iran, describing the decision as a positive step toward regional stability.
In a statement posted on X, Sharif said he was grateful, on his own behalf and that of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, for Washington’s decision, adding that it could strengthen ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Moreover, Sharif reiterated that Pakistan has consistently supported peaceful and negotiated resolutions to conflicts. He urged all sides to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue to achieve lasting peace.
He added that Islamabad would continue to play a constructive role and work with the international community to advance stability in the region.Trump announces temporary extension, signals caution
Meanwhile, President Trump confirmed a temporary extension of the ceasefire, stating that the United States would refrain from military action against Iran for now. He said the pause was intended to provide space for diplomacy and allow negotiations to proceed.
However, Trump made clear that the extension was not intended as a long-term arrangement. He warned that if talks failed to produce results, Washington could consider tougher measures. At the same time, he emphasised that US security and strategic interests would remain protected under all circumstances.
In addition, Trump noted that appeals from Pakistan’s leadership, including Sharif and Field Marshal Munir, had encouraged restraint and contributed to the decision to de-escalate tensions.
Mixed reactions emerge from TehranOn the other hand, reactions from Iran remained sharply critical. An adviser to the speaker of Iran’s parliament dismissed the US announcement, saying it carried no significance and accusing Washington of attempting to dictate terms despite what he described as a weakened position.
The adviser further argued that ongoing pressure on Iran amounted to an act of aggression and suggested it warranted a military response. He also cautioned that the ceasefire extension could be a tactical move to gain time, warning that Tehran should remain vigilant and prepared to act.
Earlier, Iranian state media reported that Tehran had rejected US conditions for negotiations, while also asserting that the ceasefire extension had been announced unilaterally by Washington.Global attention turns to next steps.
As a result, the development has drawn significant international attention, with analysts closely watching whether the pause in hostilities will translate into meaningful diplomatic progress. The coming days are expected to be critical in determining whether negotiations can ease tensions or lead to further escalation.
