Web Desk: Police in Azad Jammu and Kashmir have arrested a suspected operative accused of working for India’s intelligence agency and gathering sensitive information on key sites, officials said on Thursday.

The suspect was detained during an operation in Rawalakot and is believed to have conducted surveillance of military facilities, schools and other public locations, according to authorities.

Inspector General of Police for Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Liaquat Ali Malik, told a press briefing that the accused had been recording images and videos of sensitive installations and civilian areas.

Data recovered from the suspect’s mobile phone indicated direct communication with handlers based in India, officials said. Investigators added that instructions included filming specific locations, including mosques during evening gatherings, and sharing detailed footage along with live location data.

Authorities said such material could be used to plan potential attacks or acts of sabotage.

Malik said the case pointed to a wider effort to transmit small but critical pieces of information across the border for hostile purposes. He added that law enforcement agencies were working to identify and apprehend other individuals linked to the network.

“We will not allow any attempt to compromise the security and sanctity of this region,” he said, vowing to counter what he described as hostile designs.

The arrest comes amid heightened tensions along the Line of Control, with officials alleging continued attempts to destabilise the region. Authorities said the targeting of so-called soft locations such as schools and places of worship suggested plans aimed at causing casualties or spreading fear.

Police said timely coordination between law enforcement and intelligence agencies helped avert a potentially serious incident. A formal case has been registered, and investigations remain ongoing.
