France refuses to provide India with Rafale source code

⏱ 1 minute read
France Rafale to India

France has refused to provide India with the core software source code for its Rafale fighter jets, dealing a major blow to New Delhi’s air sovereignty strategy.

The refusal specifically concerns sensitive systems, including the Thales RBE2 AESA radar, the Modular Data Processing Unit (MDPU), and the SPECTRA electronic warfare suite, which together form the foundation of the aircraft’s sensor fusion, survivability, and electronic warfare capabilities.

French authorities consider these software systems highly sensitive and the result of years of research, and therefore wish to retain full control.

As a result, India will not be able to make autonomous technical modifications or upgrades to its Rafale jets.

This development comes as India is considering the purchase of 114 more Rafale aircraft under its multi-role fighter program, with the potential deal valued at approximately $36 billion, making it one of the largest defense contracts in modern history.
