PDMA alert in upper KP

Peshawar: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert to the administrations of five sensitive districts in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

According to PDMA, weather conditions may cause glaciers to melt in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Upper Kohistan. Heavy rainfall could trigger glacial lake outbursts, flash floods, and landslides.

A PDMA spokesperson stated that instructions have been issued to the relevant district administrations to take emergency measures and ensure preparedness. Authorities have been directed to continuously monitor sensitive glacial areas and keep early warning systems active.

Additionally, concerned departments and district administrations have been told to conduct evacuation drills in high-risk areas and ensure that evacuation centers are fully operational and equipped with necessary facilities.

PDMA has advised people living in low-lying areas to remain alert and inform local communities about potential risks in advance. Rescue and emergency service personnel have also been instructed to stay on high alert.
