Web Desk: Scuffles and long queues were reported at fuel stations across India on Friday as rising prices and supply concerns triggered public frustration, according to local media reports and social media footage.
Witnesses described heated arguments and occasional physical altercations at several petrol stations, particularly in densely populated urban centers. Videos circulating online showed crowds jostling for access to fuel, while some stations struggled to manage growing lines of vehicles.
India, home to more than 1.5 billion people, relies heavily on a steady supply of petrol, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and compressed natural gas (CNG) to meet its vast energy needs. Any disruption or perceived shortage tends to amplify public anxiety quickly.
Moreover, the recent surge in fuel prices has intensified criticism of the government’s energy policies. Some citizens questioned the timing of major expenditures and raised concerns about affordability and access to essential fuels.
In addition, critics have pointed to India’s increasing dependence on energy imports, arguing that it leaves the country vulnerable to global price fluctuations. Others have voiced concern over the management of domestic energy resources, including state-run companies such as Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.
However, there has been no official confirmation of widespread fuel shortages, and authorities have not reported any large-scale disruptions to national supply chains.
Meanwhile, the government led by Narendra Modi has not issued a detailed response to the incidents or the criticism circulating online. Officials have previously maintained that fuel pricing is influenced by global market conditions.
Separately, India has recently approved significant defense procurement deals, including multi-billion-dollar purchases of advanced weapons systems. The juxtaposition of rising fuel costs and high public spending has further fueled debate among citizens and political observers.
Despite alarming claims circulating on social media, there is no verified evidence of large-scale riots or civil war conditions linked to fuel shortages. Analysts note that while localized incidents can occur during periods of economic strain, broader instability has not been substantiated.
Nevertheless, the situation highlights the sensitivity of fuel pricing in India, where even modest increases can have immediate and visible effects on daily life. Authorities are likely to remain under pressure to ensure stable supply and address public concerns in the coming days.
