Web Desk: A massive explosion rocked the Valero Port Arthur refinery on Monday evening, sending towering plumes of black smoke into the sky and prompting authorities to issue an immediate shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

The blast occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. local time at the 435,000-barrel-per-day facility located about 90 miles east of Houston. Residents in Port Arthur, Groves, and Nederland reported a loud boom that rattled windows and shook homes miles away from the site. Following the explosion, a large fire erupted within one of the refinery units, with orange flames visible from a distance against the evening sky.

Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens stated that an industrial heater likely caused the explosion. Despite the scale of the blast, Valero officials confirmed that all personnel are accounted for and no injuries have been reported.

In response to the incident, the Port Arthur Police Department and emergency management officials ordered residents on the west side of the city, including Sabine Pass and Pleasure Island, to stay indoors. Authorities also closed portions of State Highways 82 and 87 as a precaution while emergency crews worked to contain the blaze. The closure temporarily stranded some students returning from after-school activities in Sabine Pass, as the highway serves as the primary route connecting the peninsula to the city.

Meanwhile, environmental teams and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality began monitoring air quality in the area after residents reported a strong smell of sulfur. Although the fire remained active for several hours, fire officials noted that the situation stabilized by late Monday night.

Consequently, the Sabine Pass Independent School District announced the cancellation of classes for Tuesday. Valero’s emergency response teams continue to coordinate with local fire departments to extinguish the remaining flames and investigate the full extent of the damage to the critical fuel-producing hub.
