Protests trigger security crackdown in Srinagar

Stone-throwing incidents were reported in Batamalo, HMT and Nowgam areas of Srinagar after Indian occupational forces used tear gas to disperse protesters.

Eyewitnesses described tense scenes as streets filled with smoke while protesters and security personnel faced off amid heightened emotions.


The unrest comes against the backdrop of long-standing tensions in Indian-administered Kashmir, particularly since the revocation of the region’s special constitutional status under Article 370 in 2019. Since then, periodic shutdowns, protests and security operations have contributed to a fragile security environment.


Authorities have often imposed restrictions and increased patrols during periods of unrest, citing security concerns. In contrast, local residents and political observers say recurring confrontations reflect deep-rooted grievances and political uncertainty.
