Web Desk: India have been dealt a major setback at the T20 World Cup after opening batter Abhishek Sharma was hospitalised with a stomach infection, putting his participation in the upcoming match against Namibia in doubt.

Indian media reported that Sharma had been unwell even before India’s match against the United States. Although he took the field for the team, his condition deteriorated after the game, prompting immediate medical attention.

According to reports, Sharma developed a high fever and was administered intravenous fluids. He also skipped a scheduled practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

Subsequently, he was admitted to a private hospital in the capital, where doctors are conducting a series of tests to determine the nature and severity of the infection. Team management is closely monitoring his health.

Sharma was dismissed for a first-ball duck against the United States. Moreover, he did not return to the field during India’s fielding innings, with Sanju Samson taking over responsibilities. He also missed the customary post-match handshake ceremony, underlining concerns over his fitness.

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters that Sharma was dealing with “stomach issues” and expressed hope that the opener would feel better within two days. However, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official indicated that Sharma’s availability for the Namibia fixture remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Washington Sundar has joined the squad, providing additional options for the team. In a further boost, pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has resumed bowling after a 10-day break and is reportedly feeling better.

The team management remains optimistic that key players will regain full fitness as the tournament progresses. India are scheduled to face arch-rivals Pakistan on Feb. 15 in a highly anticipated T20 World Cup clash.
