Absence of KP doctors from govt hospitals becomes alarming

Repeated absence of doctors in public hospitals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has become a matter of concern, while the provincial government is oblivious to the situation.

As per details, a report on the attendance of medical officers in district headquarter (DHQ) and sub-divisional headquarter (SDHQ) hospitals across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has raised serious concerns.

According to the statistics for December 2025, the overall attendance of medical officers in the province was only 83 percent, showing a 2 percent decrease compared to the previous month.

The report states that nine DHQ hospitals recorded attendance below the prescribed standard of 80 percent, while 14 DHQs saw a further decline in attendance compared to last month.

In some key districts, attendance has dropped dangerously low, falling below 60 percent.

The monitoring unit also identified hospitals with persistent absenteeism, which has caused serious difficulties for patients seeking treatment.

The report states that the reasons for absenteeism include unauthorized leave, absence from official duty, and private practice. The monitoring unit has recommended action against the officers, roster adjustments, and immediate corrective measures.

The provincial health department has stated that it is reviewing the issue to ensure patient convenience and improve the delivery of medical services.
