Mahmood Khan Achakzai appointed opposition leader, What happens next?

⏱ 2 minute read

Islamabad: Opposition alliance Tehreek Tahaffuz Aain Pakistan leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has been appointed Leader of the Opposition in Pakistan’s National Assembly. Speaker of the National Assembly Ayaz Sadiq issued the official notification, confirming Achakzai’s appointment as leader of the opposition benches in the lower house of parliament. According to the notification, the appointment has been made under the National Assembly’s Rules of Business and will take effect from Jan. 16, 2026.

Meanwhile, the position had remained vacant after the disqualification of Omar Ayub Khan in connection with the May 9 case, creating a leadership gap within the opposition ranks. Achakzai, who heads the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and is a key leader of the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahaffuz Aain Pakistan, was nominated for the role by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan. As a result, his appointment consolidates the opposition’s parliamentary leadership at a time of heightened political tension and legislative challenges.

Going forward, Achakzai is expected to play a central role in shaping opposition strategy inside parliament, including oversight of government policies and coordination among allied parties. The development marks a significant moment in Pakistan’s evolving political landscape as the opposition seeks to regroup and assert its voice in the National Assembly.
