More Tarrifs on India!

⏱ 1 minute read

Web Desk: US President Donald Trump has announced a 25 percent tariff on any country that continues trade with Iran. If applied fully, this move could push total US duties on Indian goods to as high as 75 percent when combined with existing tariffs.

India’s trade with Iran stood at 1.68 billion dollars in the financial year 2024–25. This included 1.24 billion dollars in exports and 440 million dollars in imports. India exports basmati rice, tea, sugar, pharmaceuticals, synthetic fibres, electrical machinery and artificial jewellery to Iran. In return, it imports dry fruits, inorganic and organic chemicals and glassware.

The tariff warning has sparked concern among Indian exporters, especially basmati rice traders who depend heavily on the Iranian market. Experts say the overall impact on India’s economy may remain limited, but sectors such as rice, tea, fresh fruits and essential oils could face short term pressure.
