Shaheen chowk underpass to open for traffic by next week

ISLAMABAD: The Shaheen Chowk Underpass project is nearing completion and is expected to open for traffic next week.

Officials of the Capital Development Authority said work is progressing at a fast pace and they expect the underpass to be operational by December 31, 2025.

Earlier, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the site and reviewed construction activities.  During the visit, he said the project will bring major relief to Islamabad’s traffic flow.

He directed officials to meet the deadline without slowing down work. The minister stressed there should be no compromise on construction quality.

He also ordered modern landscaping and plantations around the project. Officials said the beautification plan will improve the area’s overall outlook.

The CDA chairman briefed the minister on progress and timelines. According to the authority, structural work has already been completed.

Only road surfacing and finishing work remains underway. The underpass is located at the junction of 9th Avenue and Khyaban-i-Iqbal, which remains one of Islamabad’s most congested points.

Daily traffic jams and long delays are common in the area.

Built at a cost of around Rs1.3 billion, the project aims to remove traffic signals. It will allow uninterrupted movement of vehicles.

Officials say it will significantly improve commuting time for daily motorists.
