Fact Check: Rumours about water blockage in Chenab, Jhelum, Neelum rivers false

⏱ 2 minute read

Rumours about water blockage in Chenab, Jhelum and Neelum rivers are baseless and fake. According to sources, no alarm has been sounded by the Indus Water Treaty commission. The rumours came after some careless media news outlets reported the rumours. The media outlets are spreading unnecessary panic by running unverified news from unverified sources.

During this time of the year fluctuation in water flows for an hour or half is a normal and historical phenomenon.

Indus water commission said fluctuations in water flows in the Chenab, Jhelum, and Neelum rivers are a usual happening and reports suggesting otherwise are baseless claims. The commission stated that some Pakistani media channels aired news based on unverified sources, and creating unnecessary sensationalism and drama.

Media should only depend upon official and verified information when reporting on sensitive matters to avoid misunderstandings.

Today the UN supported Pakistan’s stance on IWT. This fake media report is a deliberate attempt to cause anxiety and confusion. The fake news was supposed to take the attention away from UN supporting Pakistan’s stance on IWT.

Unfortunately some channels aired this fake news without checking.

Currently the water levels in these three rivers are near to normal.

In any case it is important is that Pakistan increases its storage capacity of monsoon season.
