Devon Conway and Tom Latham put on a partnership of 323 against the West Indies on Thursday. They were able to break the World Test Championship record for the opening wicket. They also made the second-highest in New Zealand’s test history.

The record was previously held by India due to Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma for the highest opening partnership since the start of the ICC World Test Championship.

The opening duo put on 323 for the opening wicket. Devon Conway scored 178 runs, scoring his sixth century. While skipper Latham scored 137, scoring his 15th century. The batters put the West Indies bowlers to the sword in Mount Maunganui.

West Indies did manage to out Latham on the opening day. The veteran Kemar Roach took the wicket. On the crease, Conway was joined by night-watcher Jacob Duffy. The day finished with hosts in control of the third test at 334/1.

It is interesting to note that the last time New Zealand’s openers scored more than 300 runs at the opening wicket, you would have to go back to April of 1972. Terry Jarvis and Glenn Turner were able to score 387 runs on the first wicket. Coincidentally, they also scored it against the West Indies.

Conway and Latham could not surpass this New Zealand record; however, they did manage to claim the record for the highest since the World Test Championship commenced in 2019.

The record was previously held by Agarwal and Rohit since they put on 317 for the opening wicket against South Africa.
