KABUL: Taliban authorities summoned four young Afghan men for wearing clothes inspired by the TV series Peaky Blinders.

The clothing conflicted with Islamic and Afghan values as revealed by a Taliban spokesman. BBC was told by him that the culture shown in the series goes against Afghan traditions.

The friends can be seen wearing three-piece suits, posing in flat caps in videos shared online. Their clothes were similar to the clothes worn in the show. The show is set in post-world war one England. The men have been released.

Strict rules have been enforced on daily life by Afghan Taliban since taking power in 2021 based on their own interpretation Islamic Sharia Law. A spokesman, Saiful Ismal Khyber for the Vice and Virtue Department in Herat said that they could have even tolerated jeans, but the values linked to Peaky Blinders were not.

All of the men were in their early twenties. They also belong to Jibrail town in Herat Province. They were reported to the so-called morality police and were questioned on the next day.

According to Khyber the young men were accused of copying film actors and promoting foreign culture. He further added that the young men will further go through a rehabilitation programme.

It was also clarified that they men did not experience a formal arrest. They were only asked to come, given advice and then they were allowed to leave.

He further emphasized that Afghan society should stay away from foreign influences and follow its own traditions.
