Islamabad: Pakistan’s Directorate General of Immigration and Passports has introduced a detailed guide for citizens applying for passport online through its e-services portal, aiming to reduce long queues and simplify the process nationwide.
Online Applications Replace Long Waits
According to a video message shared on social media, citizens can now apply for or renew passports online without visiting passport offices. The department directed users to the official website, onlinemrp.dgip.gov.pk, to initiate their applications.
Step-by-Step Registration
The video explained that returning users can log in directly, while new applicants must register by clicking the sign-up option. They are required to enter personal information, ensuring that their mobile number and email address are correct.
After completing the form, applicants must enter a verification code and proceed to the next step. They will then receive a verification link via email. Clicking the link and entering the code completes the registration, allowing users to log in with their credentials.
Submitting a New Application
Once logged in, applicants can choose from five service options depending on their needs. The department noted that online renewal is available only when the existing passport has less than one year of validity remaining. However, applicants cannot request major changes such as name or profession updates through the online system.
Selecting a Nearby Passport Office
If an applicant is required to appear in person, the portal offers a drop-down menu to help them select the nearest passport office. Officials said the feature is meant to reduce travel time and prevent applicants from having to visit distant centers.
Photo and File Requirements
The instructional video also detailed photo guidelines for both men and women, emphasizing that uploaded files must not exceed 1 MB. All documents must be in PNG, JPG, or JPEG formats to be accepted by the portal.
A Push Toward Digital Convenience
With the expanded e-services portal, the department aims to make passport processing more efficient and user-friendly, encouraging citizens to shift to digital services rather than relying on walk-in visits.
