Karachi: The Sindh Population Welfare Department has launched a new mobile application that offers free, confidential counseling on family planning and reproductive health. The initiative aims to reduce Pakistan’s high abortion rate estimated at 3.6 million annually by making professional guidance on contraception more accessible and discreet.

Digital Support for Couples Seeking Privacy

Officials said the app was designed for couples who avoid visiting family planning centres or taking proper counseling on family planning due to privacy concerns or social stigma. Through the platform, users can receive personalised counseling from qualified doctors, learn about modern contraceptive methods and seek assistance in case of medical complications. The app ensures complete confidentiality, allowing users to make informed decisions from the comfort of their homes.

Collaboration with Health Partners

Sindh Population Welfare Secretary Hafeezullah Abbasi said the department developed the app in collaboration with the World Bank and Pathfinder International, and Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho approved it. The department is currently conducting a six-month pilot phase before releasing the digital service to the general public. Abbasi added that the collaboration ensures the app meets both medical quality and data protection standards.

Strengthening Data Systems and Privacy

Abbasi emphasized that user data will remain strictly confidential and protected under secure digital systems. He added that the app will also help the department build a robust electronic data network to monitor family planning initiatives more effectively and guide future policy decisions.

Access to Nearby Clinics and Offline Features

The app includes a location-based feature that helps users find nearby family planning clinics and view details such as available services, doctor profiles, and operating hours. It also offers comprehensive information on both short- and long-term contraceptive methods, a list of frequently asked questions, and a helpline number for quick assistance. Importantly, the platform can function offline, ensuring accessibility for users in remote areas with limited internet connectivity.

Promoting Reproductive Health Awareness

Officials said the initiative represents a major step forward in promoting reproductive health awareness and reducing social barriers to family planning. By combining digital innovation with privacy protection, Sindh aims to empower couples to make safe and informed decisions about their reproductive choices.
