Web Desk: Samsung is preparing to slim down its Galaxy Z Flip series with the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 8, following the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 earlier this year. Industry insiders suggest the company aims to reduce the Flip 8’s thickness and weight by over 10%, addressing longstanding complaints about the Flip series’ bulkiness.
Boosting Foldable Sales
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 received positive reviews for its lighter frame, wider cover display, and overall improved design, while the Flip 7 underperformed despite featuring a larger external screen and upgraded Snapdragon chipset. Samsung hopes that the Z Flip 8 will outperform its predecessor and drive overall foldable sales up by approximately 10% in 2026. According to The Bell, the company plans to ship 6.7 million units of the Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 combined, a notable increase from this year.
Key Upgrades Expected
Reports indicate that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 will be significantly slimmer and lighter, potentially measuring around 12mm thick when folded and weighing roughly 169 grams. Samsung also plans to integrate software improvements, including One UI 9 enhancements, to make the external cover display more functional and responsive. Additionally, the company may equip the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with a larger 5,000mAh battery, laser-drilled metal plate technology to reduce display creasing, and renewed S Pen support, which it removed from the Fold 7 to achieve a thinner design.
Competition with Apple
Samsung’s foldable strategy comes as Apple is reportedly preparing to release its first foldable iPhone next year. Analysts suggest that the launch could challenge Samsung’s market share, prompting the South Korean tech giant to prioritize design refinements and user experience upgrades in its next-generation foldables.
Market Outlook
The Galaxy Z Fold 7’s success, including a 50% sales increase in the U.S. compared to its predecessor, has encouraged Samsung to continue investing in foldables. Although the Z Flip series previously lagged in sales, Samsung expects the upcoming Z Flip 8 to change that trend, as it will offer consumers a more compact and lighter premium foldable device.
