Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has denied reports suggesting that former Test cricketer Wahab Riaz has been given a new role within the board, clarifying that he continues to work as a consultant.

A PCB spokesperson said in a statement on Friday that Wahab Riaz, who has previously served as a member of the national men’s selection committee and senior team manager, remains associated with the board in a consultancy capacity. “He has not been assigned any new responsibility,” the spokesperson added.

The clarification came amid local media reports claiming that Riaz was being appointed as a consultant for the national women’s cricket team a move that sources had said the board was considering.

Reports of new assignment surface

According to the unconfirmed reports, PCB officials had decided to bring Riaz on board to assist the women’s team and were planning to make a formal announcement soon. Sources also hinted at possible changes in the women’s coaching setup, suggesting a broader reshuffle following the expiration of Head Coach Mohammad Wasim’s tenure.

However, PCB officials have not confirmed any new appointments or changes in the women’s team staff.

Wahab’s previous roles in cricket administration

Since retiring from international cricket, Wahab Riaz has remained actively involved with PCB’s domestic and administrative programs. He previously served as a selector and senior team manager for the national men’s side and held the position of tournament director for the Champions Cup in domestic cricket.

Riaz, who has completed his Level-II coaching certification, has been working closely with the board on cricket development and performance-related matters.

Possible restructuring ahead

Sources within the PCB indicate that internal discussions are ongoing regarding the future coaching structure of both the men’s and women’s teams. With the women’s head coach position currently vacant, changes in staff and consultancy roles are expected in the coming weeks.

As of now, the PCB maintains that Wahab Riaz continues in his existing capacity, while any future appointments will be announced officially.
