Gilgit: As Pakistan marks its national Independence Day on August 14, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) commemorate a second day of freedom on November 1 celebrating their region’s liberation from Dogra rule in 1947 and its voluntary decision to join Pakistan.

President Zardari Calls for Kashmir’s Freedom

President Asif Ali Zardari said on Saturday that the freedom of Indian-occupied Kashmir had become “a necessity of the time,” condemning what he called India’s ongoing persecution of Muslims and other minorities. Addressing a ceremony marking the 78th Independence Day of Gilgit-Baltistan, Zardari praised the region’s people for their courage and enduring contributions to Pakistan’s development.

During the celebration, hosted in Gilgit, Governor Gilgit-Baltistan presented the president with a traditional cap as he reviewed the parade as chief guest. Zardari said the people of Gilgit-Baltistan fought a valiant struggle against Dogra rule on November 1, 1947, sacrificing their lives to secure freedom and voluntarily joined Pakistan. “Your bravery will never be forgotten,” he said, noting that 1,700 local fighters were martyred during the historic revolt.

“Gilgit-Baltistan’s prosperity is Pakistan’s prosperity,” the president said, adding that the federal government remained committed to ensuring the region’s equitable development alongside other provinces.

A Unique History of Liberation

While August 14 symbolizes the birth of Pakistan after the subcontinent’s partition, November 1 holds special meaning for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. On this day, local leaders and residents rose against the Dogra regime, successfully ending its rule through a self-led revolt and declaring their allegiance to Pakistan.

Historically, the Dogra administration had maintained control over the region for decades. However, local fighters, despite being poorly equipped, launched a decisive campaign to free their homeland. Their courage and sacrifice marked a defining moment in the region’s history.

The Struggle for Freedom

During the liberation struggle, local leaders including Brigadier Shah Khan and Shah Raees led from the front, guiding the people toward independence. Their efforts ensured that Gilgit-Baltistan was freed from Dogra domination. Memorials across the region honor martyrs from Hunza, Nagar and Ghizer who gave their lives for Pakistan’s freedom.

Despite limited communication and infrastructure at the time, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan made bold and strategic choices. The Gilgit Scouts, an indigenous force, played a pivotal role not only during the liberation movement but also in safeguarding Pakistan’s northern borders in the years that followed.

Enduring Spirit of Service and Sacrifice

The people of Gilgit-Baltistan have continued to serve Pakistan with dedication. The region’s soldiers, including Nishan-e-Haider recipient Lalak Jan Shaheed, stand as symbols of valor and patriotism. Though home to barely two million people, Gilgit-Baltistan has produced a significant number of officers, generals and professionals who contribute to Pakistan’s military, science and politics.

Today, the region’s youth, scientists and civil servants play vital roles in national development. Gilgit-Baltistan’s strategic importance continues to grow through projects such as the Karakoram Highway and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which connect Pakistan to international markets.

A Bond Forged in Faith and Sacrifice

Rich in natural resources, breathtaking mountains and potential for tourism, Gilgit-Baltistan stands as a jewel in Pakistan’s crown. Locals see their identity deeply tied to the country’s progress.

“Pakistan gave us recognition, opportunity and a path to development,” one resident said during the celebrations. “If we continue to serve our nation with sincerity, Pakistan will achieve even greater heights.”

As Gilgit-Baltistan celebrates November 1 each year, its people reaffirm their faith in the unity of Pakistan a bond strengthened by faith, sacrifice and love for the homeland.
