Trump's Jibe

US President Donald Trump took aim at India’s Modi-led government, pointing out the destruction of seven jets in May’s clash with Pakistan as a significant setback.

He also claimed of his role in mediating the truce, claiming he personally prevented a potential nuclear war.

While speaking with the business community in Japan, Trump said many of the conflicts he stopped were due to the tariffs he imposed on several nations, claiming he did “a great service to the world”.

“If you look at India and Pakistan, they were going at it,” Trump said. “Seven brand-new, beautiful planes were shot down.

“I said to [Indian] Prime Minister Modi and I said to the Prime Minister [Shehbaz Sharif], very nice man, a very good man, and the Field Marshal [Asim Munir] over in Pakistan … I said, ‘look we’re not going to do any trade if you’re going to be fighting’,” he said.

“We said ‘no, we’re not doing any deals if you’re going to fight’ and within 24 hours that was the end of that. It was amazing, actually,” he added. “I think trade is responsible for 70 per cent of the fact that we didn’t have wars.”

No war with Pakistan:

Earlier, last week, U.S. President Donald Trump had told Narendra Modi to avoid war with Pakistan. Donald Trump said while addressing a Diwali celebrations ceremony on Monday that he had a briefed telephonic conversation with Modi on many issues, including trade.

Donald Trump stated that he had told Modi that there should be no war with Pakistan, asserting that he helped defuse rising tension through diplomacy and trade pressure.
